This particular project involved a beautiful listed home in Hampstead belonging to a well-known music producer, whose house was previously owned by a famous singer Paul Robeson.
The area beneath the grand entrance steps had been transformed into an elegant wine storage room that the client was extremely proud of. One of its most distinctive features was the exposed brick vaulted ceiling, which added warmth and authenticity to the space.
Unfortunately, the very feature the client loved was also the source of the problem.
The Problem
The exposed brickwork beneath the entrance steps was porous and allowing water to penetrate through the structure. Over time, moisture ingress was creating damp conditions and mould growth within the wine storage area.
Not only was this affecting the environment within the room, but it also posed a risk to the valuable wine collection being stored there.
The challenge was clear: permanently stop the water ingress whilst preserving the original appearance that gave the room its unique character.
Our Solution
Following a detailed survey, Crown Preservation designed a bespoke waterproofing solution focused on tanking the entire underside of the entrance steps.
Working within a listed building requires a sensitive approach and meticulous attention to detail. Our team carefully prepared the substrate before installing a specialist tanking system designed to create a permanent waterproof barrier.
Every stage of the installation was undertaken with precision to ensure the structure remained fully protected for years to come.
Preserving the Original Aesthetic
Once the waterproofing works had been completed, the client’s builder installed high-quality replica brick tiles to recreate the appearance of the original exposed brickwork.
The result is a seamless finish that perfectly replicates the original vaulted brick ceiling, whilst concealing a modern waterproofing system behind it.
Visitors would never know that extensive damp-proofing works had taken place.
The transformation has been remarkable.
What was once a damp and mould-prone area is now a warm, elegant and fully protected wine storage room that complements the luxury of the home.
